My AC Is Acting Strange... Is This Normal?

Sometimes, it’s perfectly normal for your air conditioner to operate a little differently from what you’re used to. For example, your AC might run longer cooling cycles in South Carolina’s hotter temperatures compared to its milder weather.

Often, however, when your AC is acting strange, you might be experiencing a problem that requires the help of a professional. Here are some of the most common strange AC behaviors that can signal that it’s time to call the pros.

Insufficient Cool Air

You’ll want to call for AC repair in Georgetown, SC, if you notice that there’s less treated air coming from your ducts. This problem can be as simple as scheduling air duct repair to seal a hole or loose connection. Alternatively, your air conditioner might have a malfunctioning blower motor or a broken blower fan.

Short Cooling Cycles

If you notice higher energy bills and longer cooling cycles, replacing your air filter should be your first step. If that doesn’t fix the problem, you probably need professional HVAC service. You might have a faulty thermostat, dirty condenser coils, or frozen evaporator coils. A technician can diagnose and repair the problem to restore efficient cooling.

Warm Air

Another problem that can signal that you need AC repair in Georgetown, SC, is an air conditioner that blows warm air. The most common cause of warm AC air is a refrigerant leak.

If you have an older unit that still uses the refrigerant R-22, exposure to the refrigerant is hazardous. Additionally, low refrigerant can damage various components within the air conditioner.

Unusual Noises

Your AC should run with just the soft sound of the air running through your ducts. Louder noises often indicate the start of a mechanical problem. For example, a clicking sound near the outdoor compressor suggests one or more capacitors might be starting to fail. A metallic scraping sound often results from a damaged blower fan.

Your HVAC technician can determine the root cause of the strange sound. They can fix the problem to eliminate the noise and restore the proper operation of your cooling system.
