What Causes an AC to Freeze Up?

Though you may not have the same expertise as an HVAC technician, you can still help yourself by having an understanding of what causes certain system malfunctions. If you know what causes the problems you experience, you can determine the situations in which you can fix the problem yourself versus when you’ll need professional help.

Dirty Air Filters Commonly Cause Freezing Problems

The simplest explanation is often the right one when it comes to Myrtle Beach HVAC troubleshooting. If your AC seems to ice over or freeze as it runs through a cycle, you’ll first want to check its air filter.

A dirty air filter will prevent the system from pushing all of the treated air out into your home, and as all of that cool air gets backed up, it will freeze the moisture found in its coils and lead to the formation of ice.

To ensure the air filter is the cause of the ice, turn the unit off and wait for it to defrost, then either clean or replace it. If it freezes again after following these steps, call your HVAC technician for further assistance.

Myrtle Beach HVAC Troubleshooting Include Checking for Refrigerant Leaks

If a dirty air filter isn’t the source of the problem, keep in mind that freezing is also commonly caused by refrigerant leaks.

The refrigerant that runs through your coils helps to cool warm air before it gets pushed into your home, but if those coils are leaking, a drop in refrigerant levels will lead to moisture forming near them. Colder coils will cause any taken-in moisture to freeze, causing ice to form on the unit.

Refrigerant leaks are more serious problems that your HVAC technician should repair, and continuing to operate your AC with a refrigerant leak will reduce its cooling power and lead to damaged components.

A Clogged Condensate Drain Is More Serious Than It Seems

With Myrtle Beach HVAC troubleshooting, never overlook water that pools in your air conditioner's drain pan, as it is a clear sign of a blockage in your condensate drain line. The pooling of water will mix with the cool temperature of the coils, eventually freezing.

A professional will have the necessary skills and equipment to clear the condensate drain line to ensure moisture flows smoothly. Prevent this problem with seasonal HVAC maintenance.
